Verified LISP implementations on ARM, x86 and PowerPC

by Magnus O. Myreen, Michael J. C. Gordon

This paper reports on a case study, which we believe is the first to produce a formally verified end-to-end implementation of a functional programming language running on commercial processors. Portable Software Fault Isolation

by Joshua A. Kroll, Gordon Stewart
"... Abstract—We present a new technique for architecture portable software fault isolation (SFI), together with a prototype implementation in the Coq proof assistant. Unlike traditional SFI, which relies on analysis of assembly-level programs, we analyze and rewrite programs in a compiler intermediate l ..."

programs, we can obtain binary modules that satisfy the SFI memory safety policy for any of CompCert’s supported architectures (currently: PowerPC, ARM, and x86-32). This allows the same SFI analysis to be used across multiple architectures, greatly simplifying the most difficult part of deploying

– FORTHCOMING in Advances in Econometrics (vol 31) – A TEST FOR MONOTONE COMPARATIVE STATICS

by Federico Echenique, Ivana Komunjer , 2013
"... Abstract. In this paper we design an econometric test for monotone comparative statics (MCS) often found in models with multiple equilibria. Our test exploits the observable implications of the MCS prediction: that the extreme (high and low) conditional quantiles of the dependent variable increase m ..."

conditional quantiles. The key features of our approach are: (1) we do not need to estimate the underlying nonparametric model relating the dependent and explanatory variables to the latent disturbances; (2) we make few assumptions on the cardinality, location, or probabilities over equilibria. In particular

Diagnosing the Weakest Link in WSN Testbeds: A Reliability and Cost Analysis

Abstract—This paper highlights and characterizes the main obstacle to deploying a robust wireless sensor network testbed: the USB connections that link each of the nodes via ethernet gateways to the central server. Unfortunately, these connections are also the components that, when properly installed, can reduce testbed costs by attaching multiple nodes per gateway. After illustrating how unreliable current solutions can become (regardless of the used sensor nodes, USB cabling, or gateway setup), a set of experiments led to a list of dos and don’ts in testbed deployment. Furthermore, a simple and cost-effective suggestion is presented that allows to bypass current USB backchannel issues, leading to a more robust testbed that avoids manual maintenance of individual nodes. Index Terms—experimentation; testbeds; testbed reliability; sensor node reprogramming; universal serial bus I.
