Finding close friends on the Internet
- In 12th IEEE Intl. Conf. on Network Protocols (ICNP
, 2001
"... We consider the problem of finding nearby application-peers (close friends) over the Internet. We focus on unicast-only solutions and introduce a new scheme -- Beaconing -- for finding peers that are near. Our scheme uses distance measurement points (called beacons) and can be implemented entirely i ..."

Identifying Close Friends on the Internet
"... Online Social Networks (OSNs) encourage users to create an online presence that reflects their offline identity. OSNs create the illusion that these online accounts correspond to the correct offline person, but in reality the OSN lacks the resources to detect impersonation. We propose that OSN users ..."

users identify each other based on interaction and experience. We believe that impersonation can be thwarted by users who possess exclusive shared knowledge, secret information shared only between a pair of OSN friends. We describe existing protocols that use shared secrets to exchange public keys

Strolling down the avenue with a few close friends
- In Third Irish Workshop on Computer Graphics
, 2002
"... This paper describes a methodology for simulating small groups of pedestrians in urban environments. We propose a system of distributed preference voting to guide pedestrian movement along a walkway. Our voting system finds compromise solutions that enable members of a group to walk side by side, ne ..."

This paper describes a methodology for simulating small groups of pedestrians in urban environments. We propose a system of distributed preference voting to guide pedestrian movement along a walkway. Our voting system finds compromise solutions that enable members of a group to walk side by side, negotiate obstacles in tandem, and pass through a constriction. 1.
Peer influences on risk behavior: An analysis of the effects of a close friend
- Developmental Psychology
, 2005
"... Cross-sectional research suggests that peer influence has a moderate to strong impact on adolescent risk behavior. Such estimates may be inflated owing to third-variable confounds representing either friendship selection effects or the operation of parallel events. Approximately 1,700 peer dyads in ..."

in Grades 7 to 11 were studied over a 1-year period to estimate the influence of closest friends on sexual activity and binge drinking. Analyses suggested that peer influence was small but reliable when both selection effects and parallel events were taken into account. Peer influence varied as a function
Article Interdependent patterns of coping and support among close friends
"... We introduced a 3 3 Coping–Support Interdependent Matrix for conceptualizing and investigating dyadic coping and support-giving among friends. By integrating attachment theory with the literatures on coping and support, we identified three prototypic patterns of coping (distance, utilize support, o ..."

This is particularly true in close friendships during college, where there are high levels of interdependency.Research suggests that close friends Corresponding
Illusion and well-being: A social psychological perspective on mental health.
- Psychological Bulletin,
, 1988
"... Many prominent theorists have argued that accurate perceptions of the self, the world, and the future are essential for mental health. Yet considerable research evidence suggests that overly positive selfevaluations, exaggerated perceptions of control or mastery, and unrealistic optimism are charac ..."

Article Testing the ‘‘Black Code’’: Does Having White Close Friends Elicit Identity Denial and Decreased Empathy From
"... The present experiment examined identity denial and reduced empathy for in-group (vs. out-group) targets as a function of the racial composition of their social networks. Black participants rated in-group (Black) targets as more weakly racially identified and expressed less empathy for in-group targ ..."

These findings were limited to the in-group target. Although the out-group (White) target was rated as more weakly
