We formulate a kinetic model of DNA replication that quantitatively describes recent results on DNA replication in the in vitro system of Xenopus laevis prior to the mid-blastula transition. The model describes well a large amount of different data within a simple theoretical frame-work. This allows one, for the first time, to determine the parameters governing the DNA replication program in a eukaryote on a genome-wide basis. In particular, we have determined the frequency of origin activation in time and space during the cell cycle. Although we focus on a specific stage of development, this model can easily be adapted to describe replication in many other organisms, including budding yeast.

Continuous flow systems: Distribution of residence times

by P. V. Danckwerts - Chem. Eng. Sci , 1953
"... Summary--When a fluid flows through a vessel at a constant rate, either "piston-flow " or perfect mixing is usually assumed. In practice, many systems do not conform to either of these assumptions, so that calculations based on them may be inaccurate. It is explained how distribution-funct ..."

We prove stability of the finite element Stokes projection in the product space W 1, ∞ (Ω) × L ∞ (Ω). The proof relies on weighted L 2 estimates for regularized Green’s functions associated with the Stokes problem and on a weighted inf-sup condition. The domain is a polygon or a polyhedron with a Lipschitz-continuous boundary, satisfying suitable sufficient conditions on the inner angles of its boundary, so that the exact solution is bounded in W 1, ∞ (Ω) × L ∞ (Ω). The triangulation is shape-regular and quasi-uniform. The finite element spaces satisfy a super-approximation property, which is shown to be valid for commonly used stable finite element spaces.
