Abstract:

The PEACE distributed operating system makes massively parallel systems work. This duty could not be fulfilled ingeniously if at the outset many hundreds to thousands of autonomous cooperating nodes had to be supplied with a complete operating system. Therefore, starting from a minimal subset of system functions, flexibility referring to dynamic alterations is required. This flexibility is supported by one of the most basic functionalities in PEACE, the symbolic naming, which is used to identify and address the communicating processes. The main task for the dynamic alteration, i.e. restructuring, of the system is to reorganize the name space consisting of distributed name servers. This paper describes concepts of alterations and methods of the name space reorganization.
