Abstract: We present ideas for Multi-modal protocols. These are protocols which alter/determine their operating mode depending on the environment. We identify the challenges involved in coming up with a suitable architecture for a protocol stack supporting multiple modes of operation. We present a framework for a Multi-modal network stack. To exemplify the issues involved, we consider the example of a Multi-modal transport layer. We discuss the modifications that can be done at the transport layer (TCP)... (Update)
