Abstract: this paper. Kimura was the first to advocate that many of the point mutations that occur on the molecular level are neutral with respect to fitness [28]. There is often a large degeneracy between the genotype and the fitness or functionality of its phenotype---many genotypes lead to the same or similar fitness. This means that although the fitness landscape might be rugged, there are always neutral ridges along which the genotype can move without affecting fitness. In some cases local optima... (Update)
