Abstract: Controlled languages are constructed languages that have precise coverage bounds and are designed to satisfy linguistic constraints such as greatly reduced ambiguity. Cap Volmac has been developing software and linguistic resources for controlled language processing. In this paper, we consider the characteristics of controlled languages as opposed to a related concept, sublanguages, and the process of designing controlled language systems.
