Abstract: this paper, is the reliance on indicators of nutritional status. The use of nutrition as a measure of poverty is consistent with Amartya Sen's (1985, 1987) notion of defining poverty based on capabilities and functionings. Nutritional status represents a more direct measure of deprivation than income or expenditures. While we know from previous research that the correlation between nutritional status of the population and money metrics of welfare is weak, (Update)
