Abstract: This thesis presents the methodology and implementation behind a generic tutoring shell that uses Bayesian belief networks as its knowledge base. The shell has the capability to query the network, determine the best test to rule in or rule out a disease, quiz the user with randomly generated scenarios, generate story problems, and explain the system's reasoning. Explanations include prior and posterior probabilities for the disease, evidence that had an influence in the same direction as the... (Update)
