Abstract: : There is not much doubt about the potential usefulness of qualitative reasoning in
teaching situations. It is less obvious, however, how techniques developed in the field of qualitative
reasoning can be used in knowledge-based learning environments. In this paper, we describe an
answer interpretation component for a learning environment that teaches qualitative behaviour
analysis. Answer interpretation here includes (among others) verification of answers and cognitive
