Abstract: This paper is based on ongoing work with Paul Smolensky. Portions of this work were presented at the Hopkins--University of Maryland--Rutgers University Meeting (HUMDRUM) in March 1999 and the University of Maryland Mayfest 1999. Thanks to Mark Allen, Laura Benua, Luigi Burzio, Lisa Davidson, Paul Hagstrom, Rolf Noyer, the participants of HUMDRUM and Mayfest, and especially Colin Wilson and Paul Smolensky for insightful comments and discussion. All errors are mine alone. (Update)
