Abstract: : The topic for this masters thesis is the design and implementation of a microprocessor to be applied in an MPEG-1/Audio Layer III decoder. The Layer III decoding scheme is a complex compound of algorithms ranging from digital signal processing to data unpacking and interpretation. It is shown that by dedicating the latter algorithm types to a Bitstream Processor, only a small general purpose DSP will be required for a Layer III decoder.
