Abstract: this paper is to bring real time back into the study of speech rhythm. 1.2 The speech cycling task Speech cycling is a class of tasks in which a piece of text, typically very short, is repeatedly spoken in a regular pattern. We suspect that versions of this task may help us understand the temporal structure of speech and of particular languages (Cummins, 1997; Cummins & Port, 1998; Tajima, 1997; Port et al., 1998).
