Abstract:

Layered multicast approach allows multicast adapt to heterogeneous networks. However, existing layered multicast's congestion control methods do not consider the case that layers of a session are transmitted on different routes. In this paper, we show that in sparse-mode routing protocols like PIM-SM and CBT, layers of a session can be mapped to different Rendezvous Points or cores due to the bootstrap mechanism. This different RP mapping makes layers to be transmitted on different routes, and causes existing congestion control methods of layered multicast do not function in network using sparse-mode routing protocols. Then we describe a novel congestion control method suitable for sparse-mode routing protocols. In this method, we use per-RP packet loss rate to detect congestion and adopt the mechanism of simultaneously leaving multiple layers.
