Abstract: This paper describes the network architecture of the Thinking Machines CM-5, a
massively parallel MIMD supercomputer. An empirical analysis of the CM-5's performance
is quantitatively given and compared to the vendor's specifications. The
performance is partitioned into three subsystems of the machine; the fat-tree data
network, the vector units, and the scalable disk array I/O system.
