Abstract: this paper was to call attention to the enormous complexities associated with the problem of controlling a distributed software system as large as Verbmobil. To this end, we introduced two insights that are of crucial importance for the discussion of control in Verbmobil: 1. The concept of architecture is applicable to many layers within Verbmobil. 2.
