Abstract: The Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA) has emerged as one of the leading evolu- tionary algorithms for multi-objective optimisation. This paper examines the algorithm and shows how significant improvements in the algorithm's performance may be made. It is demonstrated that SPEA, and other population based algorithms, can exhibit both retreating (or oscillatory) Pareto fronts and shrinking Pareto fronts, which can significantly impair optimisation performance.
