Abstract: this article we describe simultaneous multithreading (SMT), a processor design that can consume parallelism of any type -- thread-level parallelism (from either multi-threaded parallel programs or individual programs in a multiprogrammed workload) and instruction-level parallelism (from a single program or thread) -- to maintain high processor utilization and increase 2 workload performance.
