Lorentz Invariance and the Cosmological Constant - Bertolami (1997)   (Correct)

....in the hidden sector of supergravity theories interact only gravitationally and, in case of being light, may live long enough to dominate the energy density of the Universe. This is the well known Polonyi problem which is closely related with the issues of supersymmetry breaking and inflation [22, 25 33]. In what follows we shall assume that the mechanism accounting for the vanishing or nearly vanishing of the vacuum energy does cancel the contributions of all scalar fields to the vacuum energy. Nevertheless, if from the theoretical point of view on one hand it does seem that a symmetry is ....

Topological Inflation in Dual Superstring Models - Bento, Bertolami (1996)   (Correct)

.... for a suitable choice of the inflationary sector of the superpotential [3, 4] Furthermore, there are additional difficulties related with the Polonyi problem associated with scalar fields that couple only gravitationally and which may dominate the energy density of the universe at present [5, 6]. In the present letter, we show that the abovementioned difficulties can be avoided through a new mechanism introduced in [7] for fixing the dilaton. Indeed, it was shown that the dilaton potential develops a suitable minimum once the requirement of S duality invariance (see below) is imposed. ....

....in the core that provides the vacuum energy for inflation. We 2 shall see that the conditions for successful inflation are satisfied by domain walls that separate degenerate minima in S dual superstring potentials, implying that topological domain wall inflation is, as antecipated in Ref. [6] through general arguments, an attractive cosmological scenario in string inspired models. 2. S duality was conjectured [7] in analogy with a well established symmetry of string compactification T duality. Indeed, it was shown that the effective supergravity action following from string ....

Primordial Density Fluctuations in a Dual Supergravity Cosmology - Bento Bertolami   (Correct)

....where there are two stages of inflation driven by the inflaton and a GUT Higgs field. In Ref. 11] a proposal based on a dual superstring model was made that circumvents the abovementioned difficulties via topological inflation, realizing in a concrete fashion a generic scenario first proposed in [12] to resolve the so called cosmological moduli problem [13] In this letter, we analyse other aspects of that model, namely the spectrum of density fluctuations and the reheating temperature. In Ref. 11] it is shown that, once the requirements of S and T duality invariance are imposed, inflation ....

....for inflation, the interior of the wall inflates. Demanding that ffi H Gamma1 , one obtains the following condition on ff: ff 2 8 3 ( V 0 V0 ) It turns out that this condition is more stringent than the ones that can be derived from demanding an inflationary slow rollover regime [12]. However, the requirement that there are at least N e e folds of inflation, i.e. GammaV 00 V 6 Ne leads to the most stringent constraint on ff (for N e = 65) 6] ff 2 3 65 : 9) We have computed ff 2 = 1 2 M 2 j V 00 V j for different values of a and b and found that, ....
