....Since it is based on a random placement, it yields excessively large estimates. Donath [Don74, Don79, Don81] found that a hierarchical placement technique based on Rent s rule [LR71] gives much better interconnection length estimates and his results have been used by several other researchers [PP89a, CC91, DDM, VMSVC95a, SVC96]. Donath s estimates follow the trend of experimentally obtained values but they still overestimate interconnection lengths by a factor of 2 or larger. Stroobandt et al.
