Machines of this architecture are similar to linking automata [22,p. 462 463] and storage modification machines [29]. At the interface between the CPU and the memory sits a bank of pointer registers, which point at particular cells in the list memory. Instead of a bus which communicates both addresses and values, with read and write commands, the memory would have only a data bus and commands like CAR, CDR, ....
