In contrast to felicitious English glosses, discourse (4) is ungrammatical; use of overt pronouns in Turkish signals the introduction of (or shifting to) a new focus, topic (En c, 1986) or beginning of a new discourse segment (Turan, 1995). If the information structure is retained in the subsequent utterance, zero pronouns (denoted by ; in the examples) are used instead.
