....In this work, it was shown that heterogeneity in channel densities may be important for the mechanism of STOs generation. Other types of heterogeneity, such as differences in the steady state inactivation or activation functions (Berlind, 1993) in local concentrations of extracellular potassium (Guckenheimer and Labouriau, 1993), or in the sizes of the cells are likely to produce different neural behaviors which, via coupling, could also support new behaviors which were existing, but not expressed, in the properties of its individual elements. In this sense, differences in channel densities may not be a mere side effect. ....
