....cluster node is assumed to run an operating system kernel that supports some notion of quality of service such as reservations or shares. Such mechanisms have been extensively studied over the past decade and many deployed commercial and open source operating systems such as Solaris [26] IRIX [22], Linux [27] and FreeBSD [5] already support such features. In this paper, we primarily focus on managing two resources CPU and network interface bandwidth in shared hosting platforms. The challenges of managing other resources in hosting environments, such as memory and storage, are beyond ....

....2. Why a New File System The file system literature began predicting the coming of the I O bottleneck years ago [Ousterhout90] and we experienced it first hand at SGI. The problem was not the I O performance of our hardware, but the limitations imposed by the old IRIX file system, EFS [SGI92]. EFS is similar to the Berkeley Fast File System [McKusick84] in structure, but it uses extents rather than individual blocks for file space allocation and I O. EFS could not support file systems greater than 8 gigabytes in size, files greater than 2 gigabytes in size, or give applications access ....

....to use the machine effectively. Any good work done in optimising one s code may be immaterial. What is needed is some means of getting hold of a cluster of resources and retaining exclusive access to them for the duration of a run. Fortunately this is offered by SGI s new Miser scheduling system[2]. In this paper we shall describe how we have used this facility, along with the NQE spooling software[3] and job accounting, to build a fair and effective job management system for the Oscar supercomputer. The rest of this paper is organised as follows. In section 2 we specify our initial ....
