....having access to the public key can verify the authentication information, but no one can forge traffic from that host. The signature mechanisms are computationally more expensive than keyed MD5. Considering that some experts even believe that keyed MD5 might be too slow for some applications [Touch 95] it is not very likely that asymmetric signature mechanisms will be used in the AH very often. A possible solution would be some tuning of the signature algorithm with the aim to make verification cheap and generation more expensive. This is an area under active research. As signature ....

....and four times slower than MD4. On a big endian RISC machine, the difference between SHA 1 and RIPEMD 160 will be slightly larger. RIPEMD 128 is 30 slower than RIPEMD. Optimized C implementations are a factor of 1.8. 2. 2 slower; for MD5 the speed of our C code is 36 faster than that of [16]. Table 1. ....due to the complexity of the algorithm, and partly due to its processing the entire body of a packet (rather than only the header) These two proposals together, of big endian byte order and 4way parallelism, comprise a modified MD5 that we call MD5 . 1. proposed independently by the author [30] and by Burt Kaliski of RSA, Inc. 6.2: An alternate hash algorithm In the process of analyzing MD5, there are several design principles that were observed. Some affect the performance of hardware, some affect the performance of software: Avoid bit based operations (slows software) Avoid ....
