....we do no make any distinction between states and situations. 2In some papers, they are called historical queries , but this name may cause con fusions with work done by the temporal databases community that calls historical the queries about valid time, rather than about transaction time [13], which can be better associated to the situations of the situation calculus. 2 can be adapted for the dynamic case. In particular, we can take advantage of our results on automated proving of static integrity constraints [2] when dealing with the dynamic case. The other problem we solve ....

....unique transaction identifier (TID) Whenever a fragment is written to the database, it is tagged with the TID of the transaction which performs the change. Thus, all changes performed by transactions may be traced later on. By means of TIDs, we may provide the functionality of a temporal database [54]. Also note, that transaction logs in classic databases resemble deltas in our terminology. Such a TID becomes a high level visibility of a fragment, selecting the accessible subdatabase for a given transaction. In case of cooperating transactions, special propagation mechanisms and policies ....

....several shorter visits to Denmark. Rick had previously worked on temporal query language design and implementation, in the context of his TQuel language [HS93, MS90, Sno87, SGM93, Sno93] and on temporal semantics, specifically characterizing the orthogonality of valid time and transaction time [SA86] Christian had previously worked on transaction time databases, specifically architecture [JMRS93, JM93] implementation [JMR91] and language support [JM92] In our initial discussions once Christian arrived, we identified two areas of common interest: understanding the semantics of temporal ....
....issues. ffl Why are there so many temporal data models Is a single ideal model even possible As a more specific related question, should data be stored as events (state transitions) or as states ffl Are transaction time and valid time really orthogonal, as Rick had previously claimed [SA86] More specifically, what is the relationship between POSTGRES two timestamps, TQuel s four timestamps, and Ben Zvi s five timestamps Are there more than two dimensions of time How does Thompson s taxonomy of four kinds of time relate to valid and transaction time ffl Is first normal form ....
