....For simple primitives, up to three parameters, the evolved programs perform poorly, and the Hough Transform is the method of choice. For more complex primitives, the memory and data requirements of the Hough Transform become unreasonable, but the evolved programs produce reasonable results. Poli [17] uses a parse tree based representation to evolve image filters. There are three terminals, all square blurring convolutions (2x3, 7x7 and 15x15) and six basic functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, max and min) The learned programs were used to perform segmentation in medical images.
