....many differences between these systems, it appears likely that a partially customizing system could achieve its space reductions without an undue loss of performance. 7. Related Work Customization has been applied to several object oriented languages, including Self ( CU89] HU94a] Sather ([LS91]) Trellis ( Kil88] and C ( Lea90] The96] Most of these systems combine customization with other optimization techniques (e.g. inlining and method splitting in Self. Because of the nature of customization it just enables the compiler to perform other optimizations the benefit of this ....

....and suggestions for improvements. 1.4 HISTORY Sather is still growing rapidly. The initial Sather compiler (for Version 0 of the language) was written in Sather (bootstrapped by hand translating to C) over the summer of 1990. ICSI made the language publicly available (version 0. 1) June of 1991 [4]. The project has been snowballing since then, with language updates to 0.2 and 0.5, each compiler bootstrapped from the previous. These versions of the language are most indebted to Stephen 16 History Omohundro, Chu Cheow Lim, and Heinz Schmidt. pSather co evolved with primary early ....

Chu-Cheow Lim, Andreas Stolcke, "Sather Language Design and Performance Evaluation," Computer Science Division, U.C. Berkeley TR-91-034 (May 1991). Implementation of an object-oriented language via a C intermediate language. Sather programs pay a small penalty compared to C source programs, but it is not clear how much of this is due to Sather's features and how much to going through C.
