....a suitable form, probably in several steps. As a starting point in this work we use a hypothetical intermediate representation, which can be gained from free text by a fairly simple tagger or parser. Relevant syntactic information has been selected in accordance with the detailed presentation in [Scheler, 1984], cf. Partee, 1973; Vendler, 1967] The categorizations presented here are all fixed lexical decisions and not contingent on the use of these words in a given sentence. This is in accordance with the principle of a unidirectional parser, and could be changed by the integration of this semantic ....

The semantic ....

....features, which are encoded in binary form. Descriptive work, exploring aspectual distinctions in many different contexts and collecting different uses and conveyed meanings, has sometimes led to a formulation of aspectual meanings in terms of binary feature sets [Bondarko, 1983] Breu, 1980] [Scheler, 1984]. Being the outcome rather than the starting point of research, these feature sets however were not validated for their capability of producing and predicting the correct morphology for a given sentence. In model theoretic approaches to aspectual semantics [Hinrichs, 1988] Dowty, 1979] ....

....event type: state, atelic event, telic event, cause state. Note that the set must contain the features for all semantic distinctions that occur in the training and test sets in order to produce good learning and generalization results. The feature set which has been obtained heuristically (cf. [Scheler, 1984]) can thus be empirically validated. It is also possible to use feature selection techniques for elimination of superfluous features values (cf. Duda and Hart, 1973] Elimination of features may be important for generalization to new patterns, to exclude generalizing on irrelevant information. ....

....as well as for more theoretical considerations of linguistic category formation. The set of grammatical meanings used is given in Appendix A. They have been obtained by heuristic setting and fine tuning in the following way: Grammatical meanings which have been claimed in the literature ([Scheler, 1984] and further references therein) as relevant for the selection of a morphological aspect have been set up as undefined semantic feature values. These were ordered into mutually exclusive groups, which are called features . The resulting feature sets can be fine tuned by adding features values ....

For instance, in this case, 102 is very predicative , 101 is very referential , 106 is somewhat referential , 103 mostly predicative etc. 2. 4 Boundedness Boundedness of reference is a phenomenon that is attested both in the verbal and the nominal domain (cf. [12], 8] Mass reference or reference to substances can be defined by invariance under partition (part of X = subset of X) while piecewise reference or reference to individuals does not allow partitioning without change of designation (part of X = constituting object of X) mass reference to ....
