....good knowledge engineering decisions before they can make full use of KADS or CommonKADS. The CommonKADS project has provided guidance on making some of the decisions outlined above (e.g. guidance on top down bottom up approaches to model construction [Wielinga, 1993] and model instantiation [Lockenhoff Valente, 1993]) however, many of the organisations which have recognised the value of KADS and CommonKADS have had to obtain training and accept a long learning curve for each of their staff who wants to become proficient in the KADS approach. An alternative approach to providing extensive training and ....
.... [Kingston, 1994] Since this project was performed, the CommonKADS project has redefined generic inference structures, by simplifying the basic structures in the library and providing extensive guidance on configuring the generic structures to the requirements and features of a particular task [Lockenhoff Valente, 1993]. This alteration has greatly increased the scope for defining many expert tasks, as variations of a smaller number of basic tasks . It has also reduced the utility of the assessment approach in SEXTANT, because the differences between the simplified inference structures in the library now ....

....type of task which is being tackled, and then selecting a generic inference structure for that task type from CommonKADS library of generic inference structures. In this case, it was determined that the task type was Assessment. For Assessment tasks, a further level of refinement is available: LV93] have published a paper which shows how the generic inference structure for Assessment tasks can be configured to the task in hand, in order to reflect the actual inferences which are performed more closely than a single generic inference structure would.
