....in the future. Regulations already in place aim to prevent such an accident: mapping the mine before ending operations, exploratory drilling, and so forth. Unfortunately, old maps may be incorrect, incomplete, or simply lost. In the end, the Quecreek accident was attributed to an inaccurate map [2]. A collaborative effort by several research groups at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has been formed to develop robots to autonomously map abandoned mines and active mines before operations are ended.
