We focus on Active Shape Models (ASM) as put forward by Cootes et al. 1] which combine statistical knowledge of object shape and shape variation with local appearance models near object contours. ASMs have been successfully applied to various segmentation tasks in medical imaging [11, 12, 13, 14, 15].
