....penumbra and umbra regions in a pair of BSP trees. Most other algorithms for soft shadows are based on variants of Williams depth map algorithm. We first cover algorithms to reduce aliasing effects by softening the shadow boundary. To do so, Reeves et al. proposed percentage closer filtering [Ree87], which is nowadays integrated in rendering hardware that provides dedicated support for depth textures, but which can be also implemented deploying standard graphics hardware without relying on dedicated hardware support [Bra01] When using projective shadows, blurring the occlusion map can ....

....coordinate system and tested against the precomputed depth values. A hardwarebased shadow map technique was presented by Segal et al. 16] William s original work suffered from sampling artifacts during the generation of the shadow map as well as when performing the shadow test. Reeves et al. [15] proposed a filtering method called per centage closer filtering which solved these problems and generates smooth, antialiased shadow edges. Brabec et al. 2] showed how this filtering scheme can be efficiently mapped to hardware. Hourcade and Nicolas [10] also addressed the shadow map sampling ....

....complexity. All objects that can be rendered can also be used for shadow mapping, which makes this algorithm suitable for a wide range of applications. The disadvantage is of course the quality of shadows, which is directly related to the sampling of the scene. As pointed out by Reeves et al. [9], sampling artifacts occur during the generation of the shadow map as well when performing the shadow test. To eliminate these artifacts [9] proposed a filtering scheme that softens shadow boundaries. One main argument that often leads people to prefer shadow volumes over shadow mapping is the ....

As pointed out by Reeves et al. 9] sampling artifacts occur during the generation of the shadow map as well when performing the shadow test. To eliminate these artifacts [9] proposed a filtering scheme that softens shadow boundaries. One main argument that often leads people to prefer shadow volumes over shadow mapping is the limited field of view when generating a suitable shadow map for a given point light source. In cases where a point light source radiates over ....

....ATI presented the first PC graphics card [6] with a similar feature based on the so called priority buffer. However, sampling methods all suffer from undersampling artifacts when it comes to higher frequency parts and the same is true for the shadow map algorithm. As discussed by Reeves et al. [7], sampling problems occur during the generation phase as well as when performing the actual shadow test. The first can be solved by increasing the image resolution and by using stochastic sampling instead of sampling at regular grid points. In order to resolve sampling artifacts during the shadow ....
