....50, 51] Section 2 is dedicated to the microscopic viewpoint, i.e. the introduction of the modeling approaches for spheres and polygons. In particular we will present force laws used for the soft particle Molecular Dynamics (MD) 52, 53] adjusted for inelastic particles with frictional forces [54 56]. In section 3, averaging procedures are introduced to obtain macroscopic quantities from a micro description and, in section 4, quasi static granular assemblies are modeled using smooth, spherical particles [23] Finally, in section 5, the influence of the particle eccentricity and of the ....
.... The simple linear spring dashpot model with = 1 and = 0 can be solved analytically and leads to a contact duration t c = and a coefficient of restitution r = exp( Gammajt c ) with = q 2 0 Gamma j 2 , 2 0 = k n =m 12 , j = fl n = 2m 12 ) and m 12 = m 1 m 2 = m 1 m 2 ) [56]. Consequently, the ratio j= 0 determines whether one can regard the collision as the half of a damped oscillation for j= 0 1 or as an overdamped situation for j= 0 1. As a cautionary note, we remark that it is not appropriate to identify the end of the contact (of non cohesive particles) ....

....collision models and possibly rotational degrees of freedom, might uncover parameter combinations with much slower cluster growth. The few simulations, we performed with different restitution coefficients and also with more realistic collision laws that couple to the rotational degrees of freedom [33], however, did not lead to remarkably different behavior. A more detailed parameter study and also the analysis of the cluster size probability distribution in 2D and 3D are future perspectives requiring the use of a cluster identification algorithm as proposed in this study.
