Steels and collaborators, e.g. showed that cultural evolution can explain the emergence of a shared lexicon (De Jong, 1998), a shared vowel system (De Boer Vogt, 1999) and some primitive grammatical rules (Steels, 1997a) Kirby (1999a) shows in his model, that agents with an innate ability to learn context free grammars, can develop a compositional language through cultural evolution.
