....a small number of nodes in a distributed system cooperate closely, whereas nodes in different cells are accessed infrequently. If at the base of a cell is one segment of a local area network such as Ethernet without bridges or routers, then we can assume that network partitioning does not occur [van Renesse Tanenbaum 1988].
