....the mathematical mainstream. This e ort has been highly successful, and algebraic combinatorics has by now become a mature and thriving discipline. We have chosen six signi cant developments to highlight recent work in algebraic combinatorics. Sections 3 5 are slight modi cations of the article [65]. All six areas have initiated a urry of further work and suggest many further directions of research to keep practitioners of algebraic combinatorics occupied well into the new century.
