Thesehomoge neous tasks are common candidates for the study of emergent behavior because one (often simple) set of rules can give rise to complex patterns of behavior. An example of a homogeneous task is self replication of cellular automata. Lohn and Reggia [1995] used genetic algorithms to breed cellular automata that spontaneously emit identical copies of themselves. Each cell in the automata grid can be thought of as an individual helping to create these duplicate patterns: the problem is homogenous because all cells follow the same cellular automata ....
