....in other recent works about Italian earthquakes. We just mention the papers by Betr o, Garavaglia, Guagenti, Rotondi and Tagliani (1989) concerning the statistical estimation of the 1 seismic hazard function , i.e. the hazard function of the renewal process of the occurrence times, and by Ladelli, Mitrione, Ruffoni and Ruggeri (1992), modelling earthquake occurrences by means of point processes. In this paper, we present a new model which analyses the interoccurrence times of major earthquakes, their magnitudes and the number of minor earthquakes between two major ones from a Bayesian point of view, estimating the parameters ....

....computing their predictive distributions for any area. Besides, local effects will be studied, by comparing such predictive distributions and the posterior distributions of the parameters. We consider the earthquakes occurred since 1860, as suggested by an exploratory data analysis, performed by Ladelli, Mitrione, Ruffoni and Ruggeri (1992), which identified three different behaviours of the occurrence time process since 1120. Because of the presence of foreshocks and aftershocks, which can be sometimes hardly recognised, we consider just one earthquake, the strongest, as the main shock in any sequence lasting one week. Further ....
