....execution time. Our work differs from these in that we specifically target embedded Java environments and focus mainly on exploiting leakage control mechanisms for reducing energy. We also illustrate how garbage collector can be tuned to maximize the effectiveness of leakage control. Flinn et al. [10] quantifies the energy consumption of a pocket computer when running Java virtual machine. In [22] the energy behavior of a high performance Java virtual machine is characterized. In contrast to these, our work targets a bankedmemory architecture and tunes garbage collector for energy ....

....To gather power statistics, we have fashioned a PC card sleeve as pictured in Figure 1, with a schematic diagram in Figure 2. The power measurement sleeve consists of a PC card extender attached to a shunt resistor in series with the card s power supply. Following the general approach taken in [5, 11], we measure the voltage across the shunt resistor. The card extender connects to a PCMCIA compatible disk drive, such as an IBM Microdrive. The card Figure 1: Power measurement apparatus. 1) Linux based PC with a PCMCIA slot, 2) Digital multimeter, 3) Shunt resistor, 4) IBM Microdrive ....

....For example, such a JVM could be used on a portable or embedded device that may only have a minimal operating system, especially one that is not powerful enough to fully isolate applications. In other work, we have shown that a single JVM uses less energy than multiple JVMs on portable devices [35]. Finally, because an OS s protection mechanisms are typically process oriented, it is also di#cult (or impossible) to rely on OS support when embedding a JVM in an existing application, such as a web server or web browser. 1.2 Ka#eOS The structure of our system, Ka#eOS, is depicted in Figure ....
