....storing pages in compressed form in a main memory compressed cache to increase the effective memory size, and thus reducing disk paging. Appel also promoted this idea [AL91] and it has been evaluated empirically in a number of studies first by Douglis [Dou93] and later by others [RC96, KGJ99, CCB99] The study that was performed by Douglis was the most influential for many years. Unfortunately, that study was based on a kernel implementation in the Sprite operating system that showed reductions in paging time for some programs, 236 but increase for others. In another study, Russinovich ....
....for machines without a fast, local disk, such as diskless handheld computers, network computers, and laptops with slow disks. As Douglis and we pointed out, however, compressed caching becomes more attractive as CPUs continue to get faster relative to disk speeds. The most recent studies [KGJ99, CCB99] performed concurrently with ours, show that compressed caching would provide benefit for current hardware configurations. Significantly, neither of these recent studies have presented methods of adaptively adjusting the size of the compressed cache. Douglis found that virtual memory systems are ....
