....Instead of changing all the applications, the proprietary library is reimplemented to support the mapping from temporal SQL to SQL 92. To make the library open, the reimplementation makes connections to DBMSs via a generic API, e.g. ODBC instead of via a DBMS specific API. The Perl 5 ODBC module [14] is an example of this architecture. The module makes it possible to access the C language ODBC API from Perl programs.
