....using the i PathID mechanism described earlier for intra domain routing. VI. IMPLEMENTATION AND SIMULATION RESULTS In this section, we illustrate the working of the proposed framework. We have implemented the BANANAS framework schemes in the Linux kernel: we use MIT s Click Modular Router package [35] (data plane) and GNU Zebra routing sofware version 0.92a [36] control plane) These implementations are tested on Utah s Emulab testbed [37] to emulate sizable topologies running real implementation code. In particular, we test three cases: a) when an upgraded router keeps all available paths ....
....Figure 9 shows the topology of a simple validation experiment conducted on Utah s Emulab [37] testbed with the Linux Zebra version 0.92a of OSPF (i.e. control plane) upgraded with our BANANAS building blocks. The forwarding plane was implemented in Linux using MIT s Click Modular Router package [35]. Note that this is a partially upgraded network: only nodes 1 and 2 (the dark colored nodes) are upgraded in this configuration. Figure 9 also indicates the IP addresses of various router interfaces and the link weights. The router ID is statically defined to be the smallest interface IP ....

....systems, protocols and structure. The essence of an IIL is creating instances of all aspects of the network. This would provide insight and enable validation and assessment of sensitivity of models to changing parameters. An IIL would also enable the evaluation of prototype systems such as routers [7] under much more realistic conditions. While proving absolute accuracy of traffic in an IIL or the frequency of invocation of protocols such as routing updates will be difficult, it is clear that the ability to test disruptive prototype systems with commercial implementations of protocols would ....

....placement without disruption to executing data paths. 5. Conclusion We presented the design, implementation and evaluation of the NetBind programming environment. While the community has investigated techniques for synthesizing kernel code [20] and constructing modular data paths and services [8, 9, 10, 13], the majority of the literature has been focused on the use of general purpose processor architectures. Little work has investigated the development of programming environment for network processors. Our work on NetBind aims to address this gap. We proposed a binding technique that is optimized ....

....Such flexibility has been deployed in many domains. Flexible group communication systems, such as the x kernel [26] and Horus [37] split protocols into elementary modules that can be composed together to obtain required features. The same principle has been applied for building routers [18], network traffic analyzers [28] and so on. However, there are relatively few replication systems that allow one to statically or dynamically choose between different replication strategies. Examples of such systems are described in [6, 17] but neither of these have been deployed in the context ....

....extensive static optimizations (e.g. profiling) However, such optimizations have to be performed on application basis and NEPAL offers an easier implementation compared to such optimizations. 8. Related Work Modularizing the network applications have been studied before. The CLICK environment [7] allows a designer to implement an application as a set of tasks similar to the modules in our work. In the CLICK environment, on the other hand, this modularization is done to increase the programmability without any performance consideration. In addition, the module definition of the user is not ....
