....available free of charge. In this context, comparing, evaluating, and tuning taggers for new languages becomes imperative. Recently, there has been growing interest in validation of language resources and processing tools, some explicitly concerned with tagger evaluation, e.g. the GRACE project (Adda et al. 1998) for French. Less work on tagger evaluation and tagging in general has been done on the so called Eastern European languages. These languages typically have quite different properties, in particular much richer word inflection. Standard morphosyntactic tagsets are therefore orders of magnitude ....

....Maria) Maria arrivata ( Maria has come) 4.6 General features of FAME relative to the evaluation task 4.6. 1 Theory neutrality The theory neutrality requirement is often claimed to be needed for the reference annotation schemata adopted for evaluation campaigns (see and section 3 above and GRACE, Adda et al. 1998). In the case at hand, the reference annotation scheme should include only those grammatical functions upon which there is broad agreement across a range of grammatical theories. In fact, we believe that this is impossible to achieve as far as functional relations are concerned: any functional ....

Subjective evaluation tests will be conducted at LPL (Aixen Provence) A possible extension to dialectal regional variants of the French language is also considered here. The CNRS CCIIL GRACE Action (J. Mariani et al. 1997a, G. Adda et al. 1998) This action, sponsored by CNRS within the Cognition, Intelligent Communication and Language Engineering action (CCIIL) aims at evaluating morphosyntactic taggers for French. Two corpora have been made available for training in two domains : Le Monde newspaper (1989 1990) and the INALF ....
