The skeleton is used to 3 help identify the main chain of the protein during manual model building. A di erent skeletonization procedure was proposed by Leherte et al. [8, 9]. They construct a topological network on the set of critical points of the map, resulting in a sparser 1D skeleton (ours is a denser 2D skeleton) They have had some success in using this skeleton to identifying # helices at 3 Aresolution (thus, comparable to this work) but it seems unlikely ....
