Abstract. In this text we discuss problems arising from a naive implementation of the so called Cundall-Strack tangential spring as a scheme for static friction in simulations of granular materials. We show how to use it safely and present extensions in the form of a static coefficient of friction and a damping of the spring. 1. Models for friction An important property of granular materials is the frictional coupling between its constituents. Thus, in computer simulations using e.g. the method of Molecular Dynamics (MD), this friction force has to be taken into account.
