Abstract:
This paper addresses the question: 'Are there some primitive concepts that can be used to explain various aspects of computers and computations?'. We claim that many concepts and design principles can be understood in terms of parallelizing/sequentializing. In the case of physical resources, such as time or communication, these terms translate to multiplexing/demultiplexing, while in the context of algorithmic control, we rather speak of splitting/joining. 1
