Abstract: Recently, two di#erent approaches have been proposed for defining functional dependencies in XML (XFDs). The first is based on the notion of a 'tree tuple' which in turn is based on the total unnesting operator used in nested relations. The other approach is based on the notion of a 'closest node'. In general, the two approaches are not comparable but are comparable in the situation where a Document Type Definition (DTD) is present, the DTD is non recursive, the DTD does not contain disjunction ...
