Abstract: This paper is self-contained. In the remainder of this section, we explain the
two ring buffer algorithms and discuss our disagreements with Lamport. In
Section 2, we give a brief introduction to evolving algebras. In Section 3, we
present our formalizations of the ring buffer algorithms as evolving algebras.
In Section 4, we define a version of lock-step equivalence and prove that our
formalizations of these algorithms are equivalent in that sense. Finally,we
