Abstract:
Abstract: Irrigation management involved various actors, various scales and various stakes. Models can be a useful tool to help in improving management. However, biophysical models are not sufficient to give a proper answer. Farmers’ behaviour must also be modelled. MODERATO is such a type of model, linking a decisional and a biophysical model. Using this model, irrigation strategies were optimised either using control based optimisation methods or simulation based optimisation methods. The latter performed better for complex strategies. Irrigation is part of overall crop management. Links between farming systems, irrigation equipment, crop production strategies and irrigation strategies were studied. At a larger scale, spatialisation of cropping systems is necessary to estimate the global water demand. This can be done by determining the keydeterminants of water demand and then linking spatial databases to biodecisional crop models. A second order Hidden Markov Model was tested as a way of obtaining information on land-use allocation.
